After our idea factory meeting, Andy and I strolled over to the store, looking for Wii's and such. We discussed the utility of equipping something like a coffee shop with IM to ping favored customers when the shop was empty. Thinking it would be a nifty evaluation, I picked up a Sony Mylo communicator - a wifi-based device bundled with Skype, GTalk, and Yahoo Messenger.
The Mylo is a cute device, but for the money, $300, I'm not convinced it's a good value. If it works properly, I should be able to enjoy the sort of always online behavior that I expect from a mobile phone (assuming I am always connected to WiFi service.)
Skype sound quality is decent, and the unit can be held in a telephone handset style. A blue LED pulses when idle, and blinks on an incoming message. The keyboard is useful, but among the most difficult to type on in my long experience with tiny keyboards.
